Give from a donor-advised fund with DAFpay
Updated last week
When a checkout offers Donor-advised fund, you can recommend a grant from your donor-advised fund through DAFpay, powered by Chariot. DAFpay appears only where the organization has it enabled and connected, for eligible one-time gifts to a USD organization, so not every checkout offers it.
Before you start
DAFpay supports one-time gifts only, and the option depends on your organization's setup. It does not support:
Recurring gifts or mixed recurring gifts, which stay separate on their usual payment method.
Organizations whose currency is EUR or GBP: the organization's currency must be USD.
Trip payments.
Event tickets and auction purchases.
Add-on gifts: remove them to use your DAF.
Amounts must be in whole dollars. When your gift is not eligible, the checkout says so directly, for example This checkout currently supports one-time DAF gifts. Change your gift to one-time to use your DAF, Remove add-on gifts to give from a donor-advised fund, or Gifts from a donor-advised fund must be in whole dollars.
Recommend a grant
In Payment method, select Donor-advised fund (shown as DAF on small screens).
Enter your gift details: the amount and designation. Select Recommend anonymously if you prefer: the organization still receives your details privately and keeps your name off public acknowledgments.
Select DAFpay to open the DAFpay window hosted by Chariot.
Choose your DAF provider from the list and sign in to it. The sign-in steps come from your provider.
Review and approve the recommendation. You can change the amount inside DAFpay; the amount you approve is what the organization sees. Providers set their own minimum grant amounts, so any minimum you see comes from your provider.
Return to Gratona. The confirmation shows Your grant recommendation was sent with your amount and designation, a What happens next explanation, and two references: the Gratona reference and the Chariot Tracking ID.
What happens next
"Your grant recommendation was sent" means your recommendation was submitted to your DAF sponsor. It does not mean the money has arrived, and no card was charged: a grant recommendation is not a card or bank payment. Your DAF sponsor reviews the recommendation on its own timeline. The confirmation page is not a tax receipt.
Things to know
Every recommendation needs your approval. Nothing is submitted automatically.
A DAFpay recommendation is not a saved card or bank payment method, and it is not a charge-now or background-charge option.
Existing recurring gifts stay separate and continue on their usual payment method.
If you're not sure the recommendation went through
Do not recommend the grant again; that can create a duplicate. Use Check again when it is offered and keep the page open. If the outcome is still unclear, contact the organization with your Chariot Tracking ID or Gratona reference so its team can check the grant's status for you.
